Cinema Beef Podcast : Beef Out Of The Cannon (Hot Resort/Hot Chili)

A beautiful night, no? Yeah, it's a beautiful night.

Would you like a cigar?

なおたんか

Oh, but I have a fire.

Lord. For bringing us this generous bounty.

Just give me all the bacon and eggs you have. Wait, wait. I worry what you just heard was give me a lot of bacon and eggs. What I said was give me

Hello folks, welcome to CinemaBeef Podcast. I am one of your hosts, Gary Hill, and with me tonight uh is Mr. Lee Russell. How are you doing, sir?

Doing good. Uh post birthday recovery, but um I'm not I'm not feeling forty-eight, so that's a good thing, I guess.

That's good, man. Yeah. I'm glad I'm glad you had fun. I was with you for a little while and had it well, I was with you the whole time with my dumbass doesn't know how Discord works to turn off at the bottom too. But uh

I realize what I did there, but yeah, it was a good time hanging with you and you y and your boys.

Yeah, I'll ask you the same question I always ask everybody who comes on the show. Uh what you been watching lately?

So other than uh so I've I've finally started to take the plunge and uh

So I'm six episodes into the first season now and uh thoroughly enjoying it. Um of course it's a uh

Uh well written, well acted series, a lot of uh good character actors in there. Um I uh I do like how uh Timothy Oliphant is the star, but

It seems like he kinda shares equal screen time with pretty much everybody else in the cast, it seems like at times. Like the the it's not like he's

dominating the entire story. Um there they it spends a lot of time with the criminals, it spends a lot of time with the other characters. Um so uh I'm I'm really enjoying that so far. Um

I'm gonna have actually gonna have to go back and re watch the first six episodes'cause I kinda watched them as like, I'm about to go to bed and I'll watch these kind of things. So I didn't pick up a hundred percent everything, but I can see they're, you know

starting to weave some storylines together and stuff like that, uh, in behind uh behind the scenes while they're doing kind of like uh

cases of the of the episode kind of thing. Like there's still like standalone stuff in each episode.

That's like a case he's trying to solve or whatever, but uh they're doing little little movements and little machinations and behind the scenes that I'm uh quite enjoying. So uh yeah, I'm uh I'm glad I finally uh pulled the trigger on that and started watching it.

Cool. I'm I'm glad you get into it. It's uh one of my favorite shows probably in in you know, that time period and probably

The past twenty years probably. Um Second season really gets into some, you know, more and more stuff to where

A lot of double cross and stuff and you get a lot of proper b proper villains on the show as as far as like main villains go. And and um I think you'll enjoy it as as it further goes along actually too.

Cool, cool. Um only other thing I watched uh recently that I'll talk about, um I watched the uh new Alan Richon uh movie that came out on uh Netflix, so War Machine.

And uh I quite enjoyed that. Um

As long as you put aside the uh sort of the rah rah pol uh pro military bullshit that like you have to kinda do in a movie like this if you want access to like military hardware and whatever. And also I think Richon um

I think he's kind of he's kind of a very pro military guy anyway. Like I guess he's doing another movie with the same director of this movie that's like uh a biopic on some like famous marine or something. Um so

Uh, you know, whatever. He he seems like he's more pro soldier than he is pro military, honestly. Like just like treating the uh the soldiers like real people instead of mindless drones. But um

Movie itself, pretty cool. Uh it's like a mix of Predator, Dog Soldiers, and War of the World.

Um,'cause it like it involves this squad that are they're they're training to be uh army army rangers and um

They're doing war games so they don't have live weapons. And uh this alien um thing uh crash lands after uh uh you know in the in the news uh

There's been a lot of talk about how uh there's like a comet in our solar system right now and everyone's saying, Oh, it's it's not like a r a usual comet or whatever. It's uh obviously gotta be an alien ship of some sort.

Well, they'd actually draw from that for this movie and uh hey, uh go figure it actually is an alien ship and uh

things keep uh coming off it and w we quickly learn that it's like alien war machines, these fully automated alien war machines that come down. They're kinda like uh

battle tech mecha or whatever. Um and uh they come down and the squad has to deal with one of them and uh it's pretty good action nonstop.

Um and of course like I said, you know, it's it's like dog soldiers in the sense that, you know, uh they're on war games so they don't have weapons to fight back with.

Uh it's like Predator in the sense that like these are like the toughest of the tough, you know, army rangers, but they're being emasculated by this enemy, basically, uh, much like Predator did to Arnie and uh all them.

And uh it's like War of the Worlds because it's you know, it's an alien war machine that they're they have to find a way to defeat. So uh

Uh does all the all the best things with some of the best uh influences, I feel like, and it made for a really good action film. So I really like that.

This is the guy that's on the region, right? The front from region.

Yes. Yeah, he's he's not um

he's not exactly uh uh uh stepping too far out of Reacher's uh shoes for this role. He's he's very much kinda in the same mode, but um

He's not as uh unstoppable as Reacher is in the T V series. And in this he actually gets his ass handed to him a couple of times over and over again, kind of thing. So uh

I I watched something with him in it and it was a comedy and I I knew he was on something that I didn't know. I never watched Reacher an episode after I should actually get on that'cause I hear it's good. Um play date with him and Kevin James and

He was allowed to be silly in that movie and you know, the comedy worked, so I I'm I guess he could work on both both levels, kinda like Chris Christmas, you know.

Yeah, oh yeah, no. Um I mean he uh he came off he came out of like uh he do he was doing comedy before for the most part, I think, because he was on that um show that was on Spike T V Blue Mountain State.

Oh, yes, yes, yes.

He was like the main guy on that and then they had the they did the movie that like wrapped up the series or whatever after the series got cancelled or whatever and uh

And yeah, and ever since then he's kind of been building his reputation with uh Reacher and other tough guy movies. Like he's he's about as close to Arnie as we have in an action star these days. So uh

I'm I'm all for it. And he seems like a genuinely genuinely pretty good dude as well. Like he's not a he's not a dumb meathead, so uh I like it.

Uh, what did I watch recently? A lot a lot of rewatches'cause it's it's I guess the season for that, besides the show the stuff of the show, these these are both new watches. Um

I rewatched the bad news bears at the at the job this morning'cause it just seemed like the right thing to do. It just I just turned out because It's it's it's spring and you know, I I just uh I still enjoy the first one and the second one.

Not so much the third one where they go to Japan.

Oh, yeah.

So well, the Walter Mastow aspect of it and

Uh Tatum O'Neill still uh acting her ass off. Even even we're gonna do Paper Moon real soon after the show, actually, for Father's Day episode in in the mix there and Well she was she's pretty good when she was young and

And uh yeah, i after she got, you know, sober obviously. She she g she did some decent stuff too. Um

I rewatched'cause I I never talked about the show before. So I'm talking about right now.

I watched Nona's for like the eighth time uh on from Netflix and

This is the film where we're uh it's a real place. Um Vince McMahon's mother d Biz McMahon Vince Bond's mother dies. Um Italian mother and uh he decides to open a restaurant we're using all of his grandmother's recipes and hire real grandmothers, Italian grandmothers to to be the chefs and

Okay.

It's uh it's it's it's odd. I have to watch it by myself certain parts because

My my my the the Italian roots that I have come shining through in a film like that and there's a part towards the end where I just I just gotta take a minute, you know. But um

Yeah yeah.

It's it's really good, Lorraine Broncos in it and um Talia Shire shows up at this engine, rare a rare acting role nowadays, and I um Susan Sarandon.

Oh, yeah.

Yeah. Fire as usual and just um

Uh oh, John Barenthal uh shows up as as his as his buddy in this movie. The one that helps build the restaurant and stuff and

It's just heartwarming as hell and this surreal place in Staten Island, uh this restaurant that's based on the movie and um oh Linda Cartellini. Uh she shows up at this too. I how do I forget about her? She she's uh she's always been fire to me. Um

But yeah, I just I just like it. It's just one of those um

Much like the movie, you know, it's like comfort food. You you you you y you watch it and, you know, you might get hungry afterwards, put it that way. It's like watching Chef with John Favreau. Oh

Yeah. Yeah.

What a grilled cheese sandwich real bad now. See, you know

Yeah. Just not a just not one of them Gordon Ramsay grilled cheese sandwiches.

No, nothing crazy.

Um besides that, you know, n not not a ton. I just just did just did a show, um

Not long ago. So it's just like, Hey, I didn't shoot my lid all the way there, so you know, we'll talk about some more stuff here. But uh

Speaking of shooting alone, you know. Yes, indeed. Uh this is a very special show that I invite Lee to, uh the ones the ones that we do together for sure.

Um it's peep out of the canon episode. Yeah, those crazy Israelis in the studio of uh films and these are two very spring break uh adjacent films.

One being hot resort, they're both from nineteen eighty five.

Resort and hot chili are the two films we're talking about today and

I'm glad I didn't watch the trailer. I I'll disclose that right now before their views even happen because I think it would have sullied my my my enjoyment of at least one of these films.

But yeah, we'll get into the the very first one, uh hot resort right after the break.

The Penthouse Pet of 1985.

There it is.

Love just may find.

Hot resort 1985, your cheapo IMB plot IMDB plot synopsis is this.

Young guys on on the make get a job at a resort hotel in in the ki in the Caribbean. Uh

No, the other one's Mexico. I'm lost. The other one's Mexico.

Yeah, this is this is Saint Kitts. Uh

Think yes, yes. I guess that's where the budget went. They they they filmed location uh

You wouldn't know it though by looking at what they show. Yeah.

This starts some folks that you may know, uh one unfortunate bastard, unfortunately, but yeah he wasn't unfortunate at this point. He just he became unfortunate. Um

Tom Tom Parkinson as as Marty. Michael Burrs as Kenny Bronson Pincho. You guys know that guy with no accent here as Brad. Uh Dan Schneider, the guy in question as Chuck. Uh

Yeah.

Horny fat friend.

Uh other I'll mention is Marcy Walker because it's Brandy,'cause she had a pr pretty long a long uh long career in the soap operas, if you guys watch the soap operas. Um

From back in the day. Probably subsidies don't exist anymore. Let me let me I seen Santa Barbara in that mix. Uh Which um oh and all my children, which means I've probably seen her on T V probably more than once'cause, you know, my my grandmother and the stories, uh

It was time to go outside, so I don't watch too much of her'cause uh yeah you didn't interrupt interrupt the stories uh in the summer.

Or human.

She might like hit you with the wooden spoon, goddammit, you know.

Uh but uh hot resort.

Um we'll we'll start low and we'll end on a high note here, brother, is all say about that.

Yeah.

What are your thoughts? What are your thoughts on Hot Resort? I didn't I hear one of these movies actually, so we'll uh I'll divert to you, sir.

So it it feels like in part I'm gonna have to talk about both movies at the same time, even although we're focusing on one uh

Fine. They share a sound script of course, like, yeah.

I mean they they share a lot. Uh you might some might say they're the exact same movie kind of except for one's just done way better. Um yeah, Hot Resort is It's, you know, it's your typical sex comedy plot and there's a reason for that, because of course this is Golden Globus.

And if people were not familiar before

they became canon and uh started doing their their thing there. Uh they had a they started and uh launched a successful series of sex comedies called the Lemon Popsicle series.

Um and both of these movies have the DNA of those movies just

leaking all over them. Um because uh uh especially hot chili when we get into it. Uh I'll point some things out. But um this is kind of taking that. Um this feels like

This feels like this one may i i didn't check the shooting dates, but this feels like this was shot after hot chili where they didn't have any money left. And and because this is very cheap.

Um it's in St. Kitts, but you wouldn't fucking know it because there's very little coverage shots uh showing anything interesting outside of the resort. Um

Bronson Pincho stands out. He's

He's basically doing what Dean Cameron would do in his sex comedies later. He's the uh the funny, cool guy who can, you know, kinda like get any chick he wants, but he's you he's also kind of the he's the guy who's in the no

Uh, he's the guy who kinda like guides the uh the new guys coming into the resort on what to do and how to do it kind of thing.

Um very much what like Dean Cameron uh probably most noticeably uh notably would do in uh the uh the ski school movies.

Yeah.

Yeah. Um and I mean this this does all those things. Um it's very badly edited though, like it's very cheap. There's at times scenes just stop and I'm like, what? Um

And you know, uh we'll we'll get into it, but you know, it's it's got all the tropes of of a typical eighty sex comedy. You got the fat guy, you got the nerd, you got the cool guy, you got the more

restrain guy. Um, you got men casually trying to sexually assault women and it's cool when they do it, but if the women try to reciprocate and sexually assault the men, then all of a sudden there's a problem. Um They have a a rivalry with a rowing team.

uh that is just kind of it felt felt very tacked on.

There's a lot there's a lot of tropes thrown in. That's the the slog versus the slots versus snobs thing is is thrown in. Yes.

Yeah, they the cut they but there's like there's no stakes at all.

in like in doing that in this movie. Like they they have snobs versus slobs, but there's like literally no stakes because it's not a real competition. It's it's for a commercial shoot.

for some reason. Um, which is just weird. Um uh it they it feels like they just threw a bunch of ideas into this one to hope that they could get something more out of it than what they had going in and

Um there's like a brief like workers' rights struggle thing going on. Um one of the characters is played by the guy who played the gay guy in an airplane, and he's basically playing the same character here.

And that kinda like comes around to a joke later on where, oh, all of a sudden this other character's gay and now they're a couple. Um yeah. It's just like a lot of this stuff

I gotta say it's not a good movie. Um it's it's not even like a movie that's like super gross on its like sex stuff, you know, like a lot of these movies you you go back to them and you're like

Oh no, he just like straight up raped that girl or you know, what they're doing to that gay guy isn't cool or whatever. Like there's not really a lot of that in this movie, but it there's just a really a lot of

Nothing going on. Nothing fucking happening. And and like I said, like very jarring editing. Whenever something seems to start get going, it switches to another scene. And I'm just like wondering what the fuck is going on.

Um this this one was this one was a bit of a hard watch. And I've seen a lot of sex comedies. I've I've seen far too many sex comedies from this era. I think I think I've probably seen almost all of them.

And this is this one's really scraping bottom of the barrel. Um, but not because it's gross. It's just scraping bottom of the barrel'cause it's so cheap and badly made.

Yeah, you're not wrong uh uh all on all these levels. Um

I I thought like y you you you're actors who can do things'cause this is right on time of Head of the Class, which is a T V shows I still very much enjoy, whether it's uh Hesman or or Billy Connolly as a teacher. I both things. Um

Dan Schneider was on that and it seems seems like they had a g the g the the guy they have in the movie If you're an idiot, I'm an image.

He looks like Brian Robbins with half the mullet, okay? And yeah, but uh it's not Brian Robbins. Um who we go to collaborate with later on, obviously, but but the Nickelodeon stuff.

Yeah.

Yeah. I, I, I... I didn't hate my time with this, but y when when you get to the next movie we're gonna talk about it's like

It pales a comparison and the quality. This like you said, this is this is the leftovers of hot chili. This isn't even this isn't even good leftovers. This isn't like hey, hey, eat chili the next day, the ingredients fall together better. No, this is

Chili's been sitting out for a week and maybe like you're you keep eating it and you know it's getting a little a little bit tastes a little weird. This that chili tastes a little off. Uh uh

It's not really your lead actor's fault. It's it's the material they were given in my opinion.'Cause

Oh yeah.

these guys are just doing doing their job. They're they're getting they're getting they're getting an a chance with a Canon film, a low budget canon film, and they're just trying their best and Unfortunately the uh the the logistics and the infrastructure is not there for a good film.

Um, one thing I mentioned, uh J John Robbins, I'm not sure if it's in no, but I think there's two B's in in Brian Robbins, but still

uh relationship to this movie. Also worked on Benny Hill and and the George Kennedy film Deathship. Um with Richard Cr Richard Crenner in that movie we covered this movie one time. I forget if Kr if Krenn is in that movie. Is he in that movie?

Uh I don't know. I d I don't think I covered it with you. Um

I I did that with um with um Gregor Mortis actually. We did that and uh the uninvited there, both George Kennedy joins.

Univid at Rock.

Explosive kitty cat.

And George Kennedy and Richard Crenn in that movie, yes. That's

Yes. Yeah, yeah. But yeah, yeah, no, uh John Robbins, you know, he's got a I mean, Benny Hill is like per seems like a perfect fit for what he's doing here kind of thing because it's there's a lot of just, you know

Women undressed all the time. Um, but he also and he also worked on the um the Marty Feldman comedy machine for

Oh.

Yeah, he was on that as well.

I already read that. I didn't know what that was actually.

Yeah, I I didn't see it, but I felt like oh if it's if it's a Marty Feldman like comedy variety show, it's probably decent.

So yeah.

Hello YouTube, I'm to look that up actually. Yeah. It's probably clips on there somewhere.

Um but yeah, your main ac your main the ones the ones that could act in this movie

Bronze Pincho obviously had said had a little bit of credit at this point. Mm-hmm. And Danny Schneider, who I think had a had a writing credit on this movie actually.

Oh really?

Again, I'm not I'm not, you know, I can't hate him here, I can hate him later. But I used to really enjoy used to really enjoy him and things. But uh like he does what he does at head of the class where he kinda gets philosophical, but he's way more horny in this one.

Like that the the confidence is there. So I'll give Dan Sneider one thing in this movie. For like a fat guy i i in a in a sex comedy You know, the the confidence is there in my

Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. No, he doesn't play he doesn't play uh a fat nerd in this. He plays a fat cool guy in the movie. Yeah.

Very rare thing, you know. Yeah.

Yeah, there's the cat behind his door, but that's okay. Yeah, but this one this one, like you said, for for as much money as they probably had to to to to to pay to film there.

Oh yeah.

in hot chili you you get a little bit of you know the Mexican culture in the film. You know, it's it's it's odd and weird, but you get a little bit of it, you know.

And also the uh the resort in hot chili is more of a character in itself as well because there's

you know, there's like the hidden underground dungeon part of it and stuff like that and and and and it just feels Mexican that resort. Whereas the resort here just feels like it could have been shot anywhere, honestly. Like it it's so

So white bred and uninteresting, but the like the one in hot chili looks like something, you know?

No, and I forgot to mention that that Frank Gorshin shows up as oh my fault. Mr. Frank Gorshin shows up as film. Uh the Riddler himself.

Oh, he is he is trying way too hard for this movie.

Yes, yes indeed.

It feels like he got half the budget and he decid decided, well, you know what?

I'll give them my best fucking improv uh shit and and you know, and I'm here I don't have to play the riddlers so I can I can say some dirty words and and use some sexual in the window and uh uh, you know, fail to fuck my wife um and all that other stuff, you know.

Well he play he he plays a pimp in something, right? Like is it Hollywood Vice Squad? Is that what he plays a pimp in?

Um that sounds familiar.

Now I gotta find out'cause I've seen this film before.

Yeah, Gorshion's awesome and like it's amazing that he's in this and he's actually playing a character and like doing something like'cause he didn't have to.

He he could have just coasted on this, but he's actually trying for this piece of shit. And I'm like, wow, okay. I mean that that just goes to show you um sometimes, you know, I I ha I hate to like um

play up the stereotype of like, you know, the newer Hollywood um not being as professional as the older Hollywood. But I mean, y y th this is one of those instances where you can see it, where just Gorshon's

almost effortlessly giving a real performance and like having fun and everyone else is just kind of like struggling around him, you know.

Yeah, he's in Hollywood Vice Squad, uh directed by P Penelpe Spears, uh featuring Ronnie Cox and Leon Isaac Kennedy. So

Oh yeah, yeah.

Just a watch. I haven't watched it a long time, but I remember enjoying that movie quite a bit.

Mm-hmm. We're talking about better movies where we're talking about hot resort and it's not necessarily a bad thing, okay? You know.

Um I do I do like um a couple of the the gimmicks in this. Like th there there's there's the whole joke of the of the couple that are fucking and one of them was uh like a at the time a uh a current uh playmate play uh penthouse uh pet.

Uh is is the female uh uh side of the couple and they're they're fucking everywhere and eventually like gag Yeah, they fuck so much that the guy eventually slips a disc and they're stuck in the car.

it they go so far as to cut the top out the card. Now that's a gag that works in this movie. That's usable like um

Oh, what's the line? Uh that the there's a part where the the the the the actual rowing team is rowing and they're fucking on the side and there's a line in there about this is about and like it's it's about and in and out and they're the

Yeah.

Ja, jeg sa det.

that works for me. It's kinda like that joke in Meatballs too where you know the counselor couple trying to find a place to fuck but they can't find five place to fuck and these folks are fucking everywhere.

Yes. Um And uh also there's the whole like it turns into a different movie for a little while where it's like, actually I kind of want to see this as the whole movie is where they meet up with the uh the old man who's the father of the guy who runs the resort.

And he's like, drive my father around town and take him to a party or whatever kind of thing. And the old man's like, I wanna see you guys find yourselves some nice hot chicks and bang them in my house.

And they're like, Okay. And then he apparently dies while they're having the party in the house. And then the you know, there's the whole like, Oh, we gotta keep

We gotta keep the uh the owner of the resort away'cause his dad is now dead in the house. Like you could have done a whole like weekend uh at Bernie's S.

thing before weekend at Bernie's and and had like a really fun movie with that and you would have only had to shoot at the house. You wouldn't have had to worry about the St. Kitten.

stuff you would have been to be able to put some more money into this and I I feel like there's a much more um interesting sex comedy movie there than uh what they have here.

They got a fat island state, you know, at their disposal. Hell yeah. I'm uh I'm all for that, you know.

'Cause you can you can see the uh the seams really come out at the end of this, uh especially where the main character starts breaking the fourth wall and telling us all about what happened to who and shit where

Before then, like I don't re I don't recall the opening uh him breaking the fourth wall or anything, right? Did that didn't happen.

Right.

Yeah, like it it's it's current through a chili, but here it just comes up all of a sudden it's like, Oh, we had to tie up some plot threads and stuff. So

Yeah he does the he does the wrap up thing at the end. Yeah.

I'm like, why?

And the the wrap up thing at the end there there's there's genuine parts I laugh at like um

What's her name? Mae Questel, who who is the voice of Betty Boop, but Christmas movie fans would know her as uh Aunt Bethany from from National Pooh's Christmas Vacation.

Um, she stands up in this with her husband in the in the movie and

The part at the end where he he gets her the the new gown or the new the new the new nighty. He's got the target on his back and he's got the gun like I'm so fucking sick of my goddamn wife. Yeah. I la I laugh at that that that type of humor'cause you know

It you know they're not gonna show up the odds are it you know it's it's it's

That was an old vaudevillian esque kind of joke right there.

You know, yeah, just it was written in there. Yeah, you know, and I I could appreciate something like that and

Even even the end, you know where you got the throughout the film you have this this hard their boss is like a hard dude, like a hard big, big black dude who's teaching these bunch of slobs how to how to row a boat which is you know

Extensive physical work. I I knew a guy was on a rowing team and he was just was just like stacked to the gills'cause

There's a there's a reason why rowing machines are exercise equipment.

Yeah. But yeah, this guy do being like Joel Sergeant all of a sudden

He's like all of a sudden they say, Hey, you know what? He's got a soft side. And by the way, he's gay. It wor it works better in the next movie. But you know what? It is it was a nice, like, I don't even know, to show a softer side of this this hard dude, I guess.

Yeah. And it w it it was interesting that like they for a brief second there they had like a workers' rights.

storyline going on where everyone just quits and is like, Well, we quit. If you're gonna treat us like shit, we quit and so he's gotta like, you know, he's gotta he's gotta come back and like uh

Basically apologize and go, No, no, come back to the job, please. We need you. That kind of thing.

It's not like a revolution like in uh I think Club Paradise came out the same year as this.

There was like a whole like island revolution thing with Jimmy Cliff and like

his basically group of rebels against the the the the the island's army, I guess. I forget how that works, but yeah.

You know what I'm what I always mistook this movie for?'Cause I'd I'd seen this On TV back in the day, it it it showed up on like a one of one of the local channels like late at night with the nudity and stuff still in it.

Um, but uh another movie that came out around the same time, um maybe a little later, Private Resort with Johnny Depp.

Stephen Jeffery's in that? I forget who no, that that might be another movie.

Bye-bye.

It's the same kind of movie though.

It's very much the same kind of movie and like it has uh Leslie Easterbrook in that as like a

hot older chick who's like trying to seduce the guys and stuff like that. And and I I always misremember her being the chick who's having sex with the dude everywhere and then they have the the slip disc gag in the car and shit. But no it's this movie.

I'm trying to look this up. I think it's for f yeah, fraternity vacation has Steven Jeffers on it.

Oh that's right.

Same same same kind of over yeah.

Oh boy. Yeah, this one's fine. I wouldn't say not watch it, but like if you're a hard time seeking out hot resort.

I wouldn't look too hard for it.

Yeah, I just I I didn't hate it, but I I don't love it like I like I I sorta loved the next one. Let's put it that way. But um a f a fine pairing indeed. But uh

We're gonna move on to the next one, I think,'cause we we have more to talk about in the next one, I think. Um hot chili. Uh you will hear us talk about that after the trailer.

You and me are going to have some launching.

Oh yeah

Why would four teenage boys?

He has a great invention!

Working at a sleepy Mexico resort.

See you guys.

For stimulation.

Or is it for stimulation?

I don't believe this.

I told you never to speak to me again.

Mm-hmm.

I love the organ.

Boy, if my mother could see me now. Hot chili. Sometimes a little spice is all the variety you

Uh hot chili, nineteen eighty-five. Uh your Chiba Plot synopsis is this. A bunch of American teens head to Mexico for a summer job at a resort where they encounter eccentric guests and embark on wild adventures.

Uh, the stars Charlie Shratten as Ricky. I never looked at his career. I didn't see very much that I saw there. Uh Al Al Alan Kaiser who who um

It's a night of the creeps for you genre fans out there. But if you're if you're like me, you watched a lot of Mama's Family before school and you know what? He he played the grandson of Mama's Family and

I met him one time and I seen the picture on the table. I was like, you know what, I never put two and two together but god damn it, you know.

Yeah, he's the um he's the main jock asshole in Knight of the Creeps, right? Like he's

Yeah the main yeah, the main uh douchebag boyfriend. Yeah, just

The fucking Aryan asshole basically in that world.

Jo Joel Joel Rubo Rubo or his last name, I couldn't tell you, but did this guy plays RD, but he was in the last American version as well, which I didn't mention, but I watched that too, because I I he was in the filmman. Yeah.

Which has which has a deep connection to this movie and the movies the uh Golden Globus made before canon. Uh we'll get into it. But yeah.

Uh Chuck Hemingway is Stanley. Oh one of my one of my favorite characters. I I love when the nerd gets the nerd gets some.

When am I gonna get the fuck?

Taffy O'Donnell was as uh the very forge very foreign, very uh cello eccentric uh Bridget.

Uh Victoria B Bar b Barrett as Victoria

I I love the parents in this film. Robert Rysel as Mr. Lieberman. Mm-hmm. Everybody's horny in this fucking movie and I love it to death.

Yes.

Uh Jerry Lazarus is Estimon. Uh Peter Bromlo speaking of Nazis is Hare Fritz.

Uh Flo Lawrence is Mrs. Baxter. And uh the last oh B B F Fiedler as the music teacher and the last person I'll mention altogether is the great Robert Sidar in this film.

As the gay valet Bruno. Now if you told me I was on my bingo card and him playing a shirtless gay valet in a movie, I would have said you're fucking crazy. But you know what? It shows up in this movie. Um you know what? I'm kinda glad for it.

because he gave me a good chuckle

He's almost kind of r unrecognizable here'cause like the uh the cherubism is not in full effect at this point where his face got super

Yeah.

You've been like

His disease.

Yeah, you know, he he he looks like um he he looks at he looks like what's his face at this point from uh Flash Gordon. Um

Sam Jones

Sam Jones, yeah. He he kinda looks like Sam Jones in this movie.

He was he was like pr he was pretty handsome in this movie actually as far as like yeah, that goes.

Um, but yeah, uh hot chili. I um the better of the two. Uh sir, what are your thoughts on hot chili, sir?

Um so this is where Gol and Globus basically remade a bunch of their uh

uh Eskimo Lemon or Lemon Popsicle popsicle uh films and basically put them into one film. Um they also did so with uh Last American Virgin. So there's that connection. But this is

Where Last American Version has the uh you know, that much more downbeat ending with the like the oh shit, uh the the the chick went for the the other guy instead of our hero and

You know, it's like actually something that would happen in real life, maybe. Um

Yeah, me and Nudie joke he should have gone for Rose because she was the sure thing, you know.

Yeah, yeah.

Um but uh in this one

They they're much more dedicated towards recreating the more goofy, raunchy versions of their uh of their uh series. Uh so

It like incorporates a bunch of sort of the tropes from several of of those uh Lemon Popsicle popsicle movies. Um There's

It keeps popping up in those. There's always a horny like music teacher, um, who's like an older woman who like seduces some of the dudes and and fucks them. There's always like Dominatric.

uh women and uh just aggressive Amazonian females and horny females and

almost always they're the ones that uh you know, even though the guys are like, you know, oh, we gotta get her, we gotta we gotta fuck her, they're like, Yeah, come fuck us, like that that kind of thing. Um

They they always have trouble like generally having sex with someone in their own age group. But uh when it comes to like older women, like basically uh

uh preying on the the young group of guys. Uh there's a lot of that in those movies and there's a lot of that in this movie. Um

This movie feels like an actual production right from the get go, like right from the opening credits and the score. You're like, Oh, there's money here. Um, now it reuses music from breaking and rapping.

Uh but I mean uh you know

Golden Globus paid for that fucking music, why not reuse it in some of their other films? Uh this is something that Crown International would do as well in their sex comedy. So uh, you know, uh it works. So do that. Um

And this one is definitely well a lot more raunchy than your standard sex comedy of the time. Um it it's really getting away with some stuff.

Uh this one knows better than to have like a snobs versus slobs subplot. This one is much more about.

these young guys like getting in and out of uh sex situations and uh uh sort of tricky situations. There is a little bit of conflict with the old Nazi dude, but even that's like not played super serious.

And this one's just a lot more fun. It's just it does a lot more interesting things. There's a strobe like cat fight out of nowhere all of a sudden.

at some point in this movie, um, between two of the chicks who are trying to like bang the the young dudes and they they're like, No, th that's my young dude, I'm gonna fuck him. No, that's my young dude, I'm gonna fuck him. And then they all of a sudden they have like a

cat fight where there's this strobe light going and it's like okay and they're ripping each other's clothes off. Um this is this just is a it's just a way more fun than than uh Hot Resort ever could hope to be. And uh I like this one quite a bit.

Yeah, we'll think of how Chile does very well and I I really enjoy my time. I watched this twice because I wanted to watch it again today with the other one'cause they did they kinda go together.

Uh but um y yeah, it it it brings the silly and I will say that everybody in the film

knows what movie they're in. This is what makes a film like this work so well is that everybody knows that that it's silly. Everybody knows that it's crazy.

The dudes are are are confident first but then become overwhelmed by by everything because all everybody's fucking horny in this fucking movie.

Even the mom and dad instead instead of going to the Catskills that they come there to go visit their son. Even they're fucking horny.

I mean that that's that scene where they're at the table eating supper and the the hot blonde chick stands up and her boob falls out of her shirt, that is directly ripped from one of the uh lemon popsicle films.

And it and it's the same situation where the dad is super horny and he wants to like

He wants to hit on the like I I think in the movie it's like her his kind of his niece or something like that. So it's a little bit more sus in that movie. But um

But yeah, it it's very much the same thing. It's like everyone's trying to fuck everyone else. It's it's more like uh Benny it this is even more Benny Hillish, more carry on film. Um very much and I think there's one of the one of the writers on the carry on films actually.

is on the writing no, no, uh that was actually hot resort, so it's like Surprising that it wasn't uh here, but uh this feels more like a weird British sex comedy in some ways because everyone's just trying to fuck everyone else and there's all this

Um, you know, uh comedy of errors kind of thing going on between some of the characters and just general goofiness. It's much more of a cartoon.

No, it definitely correct him to me to the point where, you know, my my guy uh nerd Stanley is

Trying to find this lady's room. He's he's he's holding her luggage, all of her luggage he's

They play the fast forward gag to where she's screaming at him and you know what? It works in a film like this. Everybody knows what kind of what film there and even the director. I didn't mention the director, but what William Sachs is the director of this

He made lots of cool things and great great genre director. Um

Yeah. And and he knew what kind of film he was in. Monocham as a as a writer on this, he knew what kind of film he was making obviously'cause yeah.

Um the gags in this film are are are are really great. Everything comes together. Um the part where where where our guy uh Arnie is is getting busy in the freezer They're they're so into their horniness that they allow themselves to get frozen together mid coitus and you know what?

It's so stupid and ridiculous, but you're there for it.

I mean that's that's that's gags that exist in this movie, the the whole idea of that the music was that the music teacher? Yeah, they they walk into one of the players that's playing the cello and doing a butt naked and you know what?

Like didn't see that coming, e neither did either they do and you know what? I I just love

Yeah, that nobody has the advantage of this movie to say, you know what, this well, you can you can watch it like this, you can watch feel like revenge of the nerds and say, Well that's problematic. There's a lot of stuff that's problematic in this film, but it's an equal playing field.

Yes.

So you don't give a shit.

Because the men are just as horny as the women, the men are just as after them as the women are. But the women are at have more of an advantage than the men are in this film because they're they are even more horny than the men than the than the men are.

Mm-hmm.

Because they're all they're all more experienced. I mean

I I love the the the the it it is it's it's so stupid. The whole German husband uh subplot. But it's it's a gag that runs. It's kinda like Robert England and Ford Fairlane.

You think he's dead, but he just keeps on coming back.

Yeah.

I just keeps on coming back to in in our dude, Artie.

Just keeps on g getting getting in the mix and cause she keeps fucking wanting to fuck him. So he's like, okay, but watch out for your husband. I mean German Nazi husband complete with a luger.

Yeah.

So the part where he he is hiding in the the cowboy in his wife's bedroom, I forget their names. I think their name is Mr. and Mrs. Houston.

And he's got the luger he's shooting. But guess what? Our our boy Mr. Houston's gotta get a real firing gun too and he she shoots back

It's all it's all silly. I I just

Mr. Houston played by the great Ferdy Main, by the way.

Oh okay. Well what have you done? I'm sorry.

Um old time actor it was in a bunch of horror stuff and things like that in the past, but uh like around this time he was sort of still popping up and things. Um one notable one from around the same time, he did um Frightmare.

Oh, yeah.

Oh which I just watched recently too, by the way, rewatched, uh which is an early uh Jeffrey Combs uh movie as well.

uh where he plays a uh he plays like a Christopher Lee esque horror star who dies but isn't quite dead. And uh the these uh film students steal his body.

one night and because they steal his body, uh his body reanimates and starts taking revenge on them for doing that. And it's pretty great.

I saw this somewhere long long ago. I I guess I'm due for a rewatch because it sounds like a lot of fun.

It's really good.

Oh my gosh.

But yeah, that that whole gag with the that running gag with the German, you know, running around doing ch chasing after his, you know, his wife's probably several lovers at this point'cause I I I doubt she can be trusted due to, you know, just keeping pants, you know.

Well yeah, she's she's not she's not so turned on by h any sexual prowess he might have or not have, but she is very turned on by the idea of her husband shooting people and killing them.

And so like she enjoys like getting dudes into situations with her where her husband will d find out and then c chase the dude around with the Luger and shoot at him and shit. And that really like at one point she

She just literally has an at orgasm right in the hallway and like falls to the ground uh because she's so turned on by her husband like running after this dude.

She's having an orgasm at the bullfight at the end. Yeah.

Yep.

My favorite things about this film is not not because I'm I'm a fat nerd myself, but you know Arnie are heavy set dude and Stanley really become like front and center in this film as far as like you're rooting for'em and they're they're they're kind of being you know

The guys with with with with with the upper hand and the story and stuff, you know, th they're they're all they're all getting some in their own special way and

Yeah.

our boy Stanley if I finally get some for the first time and he he's he's super excited about it of course and you know'cause his buddy told it told him where to go find some leaven and he goes to go find some leaving, you know.

I mean he he b he bangs I mean, you know, it's not like he had to look hard because the the music teacher was actually throwing herself at everybody in the movie. It's just it it just he got around to his turn basically.

Um, but as soon as he as soon as he beds her, then like a an another a scene later, like not even like two scenes later, he's in bed with the the chick that he was carrying the luggage for who was like beating his ass.

I mean, even even in the end, you get the end near the end of the film, you know, th they're they're st they're sitting together having a drink and

You know, she she tells them to fuck off, but at the same time they're together. So Yeah. I I I gotta root for the nerds of this movie.'Cause the handsome guys

Did they they they have they have their show in this film? But they're they're not as prominent as as the nerd characters and I I gotta love that. I mean, right right down to the end where

Yeah.

Ar Arnie is running s still running from the German and he jumps into the bull pit and he's wearing a red shirt. I'm like I'm just applauding, like, yes, it's more more of these stupid gags and it's got the gags all the way to the end'cause

Yeah.

Mm-hmm. The end credits are they're they're running They're running out of out of the bull arena and the bull has run away by now but

They do that thing where they say, Here's they do the whole pop up who's starring in the film and all of a sudden they show the crew. Here's the crew with with the fake bullshead. I love I love stupid gags like that. This film is filled with stupid gags.

And just crazy horniness. This is what makes Greece two better than Greece One people. It's just

It's just more horny. And just the this is horny is is is again they know what film they're in.

It's a big first step, you know.

And and uh you know, uh again, uh Golden Globus, they did the the Lemon Popsicle films, and this is a direct lift of like

all the kind of best gags and stuff from those films, right down to the characters. Like the characters are pretty much direct um transfers from the group of characters you follow in the Lemon Popsicle films.

And in those ones the the the heavy set guy and the nerd are more prominent and they're more of a team

that are like, you know, the much more proactive like because they have to work for their women. Whereas, you know, uh there are some handsome dudes, more popular dudes in those films as well, but they're just kinda like, yeah, they might have some trouble with a chick or whatever, but

they're not the central focus. It's always like the the the horny proactive fat dude and the nerd sidekick that are like really getting in trouble in those films as well. So um you know they knew uh fucking Golan knew what worked

and and put it in this film. Um so this is like This is the more raunchy, less serious remake of the Lemon Popsicle stuff, whereas last American Version Virgin was uh much more like, oh, there's some real

real world stakes in that film compared to this one where there nothing can be taken serious in this film. This film is is fucking biz off its ass stupid and it's I love it.

Just casual boobs everywhere and that's fine. Oh yeah. You know and

I just...

It's a good time and I mentioned the soundtrack.

These are these are songs that sound like uh sound like other eighties songs and I actually seek some of these out.

Uh-huh.

They're on YouTube a lot of these songs.

And I just I just they repeat a lot of the same songs in in this film and and in in the in the last film. But I I I like'em'cause they they c they kinda sound like other Hades songs and and they're catchy, so

I like I admire the work they put into the soundtrack for for for for these movies'cause they they share a soundtrack.

Yeah, Washington.

Watching them back to back, it's very, very noticeable, you know.

Yeah. Like I said, they they reuse um stuff from breaking and rappin', yeah, in in this movie. So uh, you know, they they were uh they were getting uh getting their money's worth on stuff that they were buying the rights for or whatever. So

Well yeah, great set pieces throughout this thing and

I I I I was I was telling it to Lee in the chat that it was uh it's way better than deserves to be. But yeah, I I I I say that I say that with confidence that this is one that you should watch'cause I've seen I've seen a lot worse of these and this one

This one manages to bring the funny, bring the silly and bring the boobs and that's

It's a hard feat, in my opinion. Yeah.

This yeah, this one really doesn't feel gross at all at any point. Like it it's like, oh no, it's it's all fun. Like it It some of the stuff might be quote unquote problematic, but it doesn't feel rapey and gross like a lot of these films do when you're when you revisit'em these days.

It's an even playing field though. Mm-hmm. Which does it which makes it less uncomfortable as far as like um hell, exponentially less uncomfortable in my opinion, because they're all they're all after it.

Not just the dudes that that are after the women and they're wanting, you know, get frisky with the women. The women are just as eager as the men are in this movie. So

If you got a problem with hot chili, I I don't know. You guys should go check it out in my opinion and There's a link somewhere.

Okay, so yeah, go go go watch it. Go go have a good time.

I I t turn your brain off and go go watch some horny friskiness and uh all all over the place and yeah.

all the versions on you t like you can also get this on uh rare lust if you want to like, you know, download it and it'll take you a little longer. But um there are several

versions on YouTube of Hot Chili. I I think they're all VHS rip.

Uh there's one that is in four eighty and it's watchable. Uh and then there's w there's a couple of others that are like three sixty that are like, you know.

Noticeably a little bit more deteriorated, but uh uh it it's watchable. So uh and it's a fun movie. So you won't you won't care too much, I don't think. Yeah.

We'll leave it at that and we'll uh come back and we'll close out the show.

All right folks, that's the end of this. Uh we've been a while since we've done one of these actually. Uh being part of the can and I'm I'm so glad to be back doing this with Lee. We'll we'll we'll do more of these obviously. Just uh

Find the right pairing like like like uh white wine and chicken, I guess. You know. You got hot resort and hot chili and

Well one of'em tastes better than the other one. Uh yeah. One of them's a fine vintage, the other one not so much.

I mean it's it is a pr it is a perfect pairing in the sense that like you get to see how not to do it and then how to do it. So

You were out this week, it was your birthday week. What you have coming up on the show, brother? Do you know what you're doing next? Uh

Uh next weekend I don't know a hundred percent right now. I do know that uh later in the month we're doing we're we're sort of picking up on a little thread that we've been doing uh lately.

Um, where we're looking at post uh Tarantino ripoff films, like stuff that, you know, very much riffs off like the success of Paul Pic Pulp Fiction. Yep. So we've already done like things to do in Denver when you're dead and go.

Um, and uh we're gonna be doing um uh Smoke and Aces, which is a very obvious, like kinda, hey, Tarantino esque action crime film.

rip off. Uh that'll be like the eighteenth of April or something. We're doing that with uh Cameron Sullivan.

And uh after that we're moving uh off of that thread again. Like we said to sort of pop in and out of that one whenever whenever we feel like it. Uh we're gonna be doing uh vanishing point with return with returning uh

uh guests uh wick and uh Robbie Robertson and uh that's one that's been in the making for a while. We were gonna do it earlier, but um uh Robbie had to uh bow out for a little while, do it due to uh

personal uh real life stuff and he's finally good to go. So it's like, all right, we're we're gonna get in the saddle and do that shit. But uh yeah.

Yeah, Smoke and Aces, um I I'd say that that the pair that was something. I'd watch Mean Guns, the Albert Pune film. It has it has a lot of the same beats as as Smokin' Ace's

Yeah, I mean we we did um we did mean guns on um didn't we not do that on last call of torches?

Well m maybe.

한글자막 by 한글자막 by 한글검수

I gotta look that up. But maybe we did. But yeah, it has a lot of that feeling of all the all the killers go into a building to to kill each other. Yeah, I think that's what smoke this plot is a bunch of assassins getting together just he was uh the last assassin standing.

Oh no, wait, didn't did we do that maybe on um on Cameron Scott's podcast? Maybe we did it there. I know we I know we did it in the last couple of years.

Somewhere, yeah. Mean guns is yeah.

Yeah, that's worth your time.

Yeah, that one's fun. That that's uh that's one of uh Pune's better uh you know, like later efforts. So

Um, this show, the next show you'll hear, uh, besides this one, will have uh a big a big guest list on it and I'm looking forward to doing this.

It's um we're do we're putting them up at show and Jay and Son of Bob strikes back together and um on that show Mike Merriman should be back for from his family vacation.

And um Mr. Venom is joining us and John Cross is joining us too. So I'm looking forward to uh a big ass cinnamon discussion about Muppets and burnouts and it's just gonna be a it's gonna be a good time had by all, I think.

Um that's it for this one though. Thank you, Lee, for showing up always always, sir.

Yeah, thank you for having me.

And um this has been your Cinema Beef podcast, where if you've got beef, we've got the grinder. See you next time.

How about Greasy pork sandwich served in a dirty air.

Nice true.
